Namibia’s next step in this journey comes in the form of an eagerly awaited seven-match T20I tri-series against South Africa and Zimbabwe later this month. The tournament is to be played entirely at the modern Namibia Cricket Ground (NCG) in Windhoek, which has rapidly emerged as a major venue for international cricket since its opening last year.
Per se, the tri-series is not merely a bilateral affair. It is seen as a trial for the proposed Africa T20 Cup – an African continental competition which, pending approval in the next Future Tours Programme (FTP), should start in 2027. The competition will give Africa a regional event to mirror the Asia Cup and strengthen cricketing between top nations of the continent.
After the completion of the T20I series, South Africa will stay on in Namibia to play a three-match ODI series. These will be historic matches, as they are the first One-Day International encounters between South Africa and Namibia.
The proceeds from ticket sales and broadcasting rights over the duration of the tournament will go to the Africa Cricket Association as part of a vision for sustainable, long-term cricket development in Africa.
Cricket South Africa have a packed international schedule forthcoming and are likely to disengage a few senior players, opting for a team whose composition is skimming the balance of experience and youth. While overseeing the workload of players, the board has reiterated its pledge to assist cricket in surrounding countries as they develop.
“This tour not only strengthens these regional partnerships further, but also builds excitement for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup we are set to co-host with Namibia and Zimbabwe,” said CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki.
Namibia has previously shown its hosting capabilities of major world events. Historically, the venue hosted Namibia’s first-ever Men’s International when they stunned South Africa in an outing. The venue has since hosted the ICC Under-19 Men’s World Cup, fixtures from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and numerous men’s and women’s international T20 matches.
The forthcoming tri-series promises to deliver good quality cricket, whilst being a demonstration of the continent’s increasing prominence on world scenes and allowing for future continental competitions.
